The Sirleaf, Siryon(Sarnor) Saybah/Washington, Sonie, Dukuly, Dorley, and related families of Mr. Adama A. Sirleaf, Sr., announce his death in Houston, Texas,United States of America. Adama Sirleaf passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday, February 22, 2021 at the family home in Houston. He was 81. Adama was predeceased by his parents, Mrs. Miatta Sarnoh(Saybah)-Sirleaf and Commissioner Sekou Varfee Adama Sirleaf of Suehn/Mecca, Bomi County. He was also predeceased by his eldest brother and sister, Suamana(Ansumana) A. Sirleaf and Haja Mamuyahn Sirleaf-Sonie. His wife, Watta Saybah-Siryon-Sirleaf, had predeceased him in Houston, TX, just a year ago, January 29, 2020.
Sunrise: June 8, 1939. Adama Sirleaf was born to elder Sekou Varfee Adama Sirleaf of Suehn Mecca, and Mrs. Miatta Sarnoh(Saybah)-Sirleaf of Suehn(and Bopolu Medina). His father Sekou was the District Commissioner in Gbarnga, Bong County for many years, before returning to Bomi County where he continued his public service to Liberia. Elder Sekou Sirleaf was the younger brother of the eminent Paramount Chief, Honorable Varfee Sirleaf of Suehn-Mecca. Regional Police Chief Adama. Sirleaf was inspired by his father's public service and education.
Education
A dedicated Liberian public servant, Adama Sirleaf, Sr. received his early education at the Suehn Industrial Academy in Bomi County, Liberia. He then moved to Gbarnga, Bong County(Liberia) where his father was a commissioner. With an agriculture scholarship in hand from the late Minister of Agriculture, Jusu M. Dukuly, Adama matriculated at the Booker Washington Institute (BWI) in Kakata, Margibi County,(Liberia) in 1963. He majored in agriculture at BWI, graduating in 1966. In the early 1980s, he then went on to study at Prairie View A & M University, in Prairie View, Texas, USA, where he studied police science.
Profoundly influenced by his father’s commissionership, he sought a career in law enforcement instead of agriculture. His police career blossomed and took him to the prestigious United States Military Academy at West Point, in New York. At West, he was a member of the Law Enforcement Tactics Club where he received advanced police and intelligence training.
A family patriarch, Adama Augustus Sirleaf, Sr., was a long-time national security and law enforcement professional. He started his career as a cadet of the Liberia National Police(LNP) in 1966. He rose through the ranks of the LNP, serving as LNP’s Regional Chief of Police in Bong Mines. At an earlier time of his career, he was the Marshal in command at the Temple of Justice, Republic of Liberia, in the mid late 1960s and police commander at the Roberts International Airport LNP detachment, respectively. After decades of police senior management service to Liberia, he accepted a position with the Liberia-American Swedish Mining Company(LAMCO) as the Deputy Commander of LAMCO’s Plant Protection Police(PPP) at Yekepa, Nimba County(Liberia) in the early 1980s.
Regional Police Chief Sirleaf, for many years, became nationally known and loved for his work as a police crimes broadcaster. His famous radio voice giving police reports on ELBC radio/TV in Liberia made him a household name in the country during his times at the LNP. “A good citizen is an informed citizen; remember the man in the blue with a badge is your friend,” he famously would open his early morning police briefings on the radio.
Chief Adama Sirleaf held the ranks of cadet in training, captain, police detective, sergeant, and regional police chief. Accordingly, LNP Chief Sirleaf received his law enforcement and police training at the Police Academy in Paynesville, Liberia and at the Law Enforcement Tactics Club, at West Point, USA. Upon his return to Liberia in 1967 following extensive officer’s training in the United States, Chief Adama Sirleaf served as police instructor, crimes and intelligence investigator and police news broadcaster, among others.
Adama is survived by his children, including Doris Lao Sirleaf of Houston, TX, Adama Sirleaf, Jr. of Dallas, TX, Satta Sirleaf-Felder of Houston, TX, Mamuyan Sirleaf of Houston, TX, Miata Sirleaf of Houston, TX, Maima Sirleaf of Houston, TX, Sekou A. Sirleaf of Houston, TX, Jango ‘Teto’ Sirleaf of Monrovia, Liberia, and Jango Massaley of Houston, TX. His sainted memories are also much cherished by a legion of nieces, nephews, cousins, and sisters including Kinnemasa Sirleaf, Macia Sirleaf-Bility, Musu Sirleaf-Dauphin(James), and Fatu Sirleaf-Siryon (Siryon) all of Monrovia, Liberia, and grandchildren and great grandchildren in Liberia, USA, and other parts. We herewith mention a few others, including but not limited to: Meatta Sonie Brown(niece) of Houston, TX, Hawah Dukuly(niece) of Minneapolis, MN, Abraham Sonie(nephew) of Burnsville, MN, Hawah Sirleaf(niece) of Brooklyn Park, MN, Brooklyn Center Mayor Michael Elliott [grandnephew], Ahmed K. Sirleaf (nephew) of New Brighton, MN, Minister of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Liberia, Varney A. Sirleaf(nephew), among others.
In his waning days, Chief Sirleaf often fondly spoke of his many friends, neighbors, acquaintances, and co-workers in places he had lived and worked across the USA and Liberia, including in Newark, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Prairie View, Texas, Hopkins, Minnesota, Billimah in Monrovia, Suehn, Bong Mines, and Yekepa, Nimba County. May his soul, and the souls of all faithful departed rest in peace and light perpetual shine on him as he transitions to his heavenly abode.
