In Grief, our family has experienced a myriad of roadblocks, deep valleys, fiery trials, and subsequently, a devastating and massive blow. As a result, seven (7) months later, as Winter nears, funeral arrangements and final honors for our mother, grandmother, aunt, and grandaunt, have not been finalized, but placed on hold.
Unfortunately, as fate opened its gates, on or about June 18th, we learned for the first time that the attending physician had not completed the required information for the medical portion of the death certificate, nor even signed. In New Jersey, physicians are required to electronically complete a certificate of death within a reasonable time, not to exceed 24 hours after the pronouncement of death, using the New Jersey Electronic Death Registration System (NJ-EDRS). Thereafter, the duty falls upon the funeral director to complete the required information.
Without a death certificate, we faced a Goliath. Settling estate matters have been delayed, access to bank accounts and insurance policies have been prevented, and a burial placed on hold.
On June 29th, a Certified Death Certificate was finally issued by the registrar authorized to receive the record of death. On July 7th, copies of the Certified Death Certificates were hand delivered to our family. The hospital has apologized, and claimed it was an oversight.
Sadly, as events in the Earthly realm unraveled, there was more yet to come. We discovered that our family had been intentionally deceived by a native of Liberia, a man with impeccable skills, who has worked on the remains of countless grieving families in the United States, and represented himself as a funeral director while unlicensed. The fraud was discovered by an alert, only after the incorrect residential address was inadvertently recorded while processing the death certificate at the funeral home.
With the Surrogate's Court involved, a trail of deliberate deception, and fraudulent business practices not initially known, were exposed. After a signed bill sent via Priority Mail to the funeral home was returned by the United States Postal Service (U.S.P.S.) with a label, which read, "Addressee Not Known At the Delivery Address," an inquiry was made in writing to the Board of Funeral Directors in the State of Pennsylvania where the funeral home is located. A few hours thereafter, we received confirmation that only one person holds a funeral director/supervisor license at the funeral home. The Liberian native does not hold a funeral director's license in the State of Pennsylvania, nor any State within the United States of America. Everything began to make perfect sense.
At 9:20 p.m on Friday April 23, 2021, Ms. Anna G. Mitchell Prall, our mother, grandmother, aunt, and grandaunt, transitioned in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit at Hackensack University Medical Center located in Hackensack, New Jersey. She was predeceased by her first born offspring, a son, John M. Prall, II, whom she affectionately nicknamed Butu. John transitioned at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on September 29, 2007, after suffering thermal burns to 98% of his body due to a fire set by arson.
She is survived by her only daughter, Yeato G. Prall, son, Tormu E. Prall, Four (4) grandchildren: Maconjee' A. Taylor-Prall, John M. Prall, III, Tobias K. Prall, and Yeato S. Prall. She is also survived by nieces and grandnieces: Mrs. Tenneh Kromah-Yahya (Wahid), Mrs. Magdalene Peabody Barkley, Ms. Marie Nelson, Ms. Mercy Prall, others nieces, nephews, and relatives not named herein.
