This sad event occurred on Monday, July 26, 2021, at his home in Newark, NJ. Flomo was sick for a period until he quietly and peacefully passed from life to eternity. His sudden and peaceful transition was a testament of his life.
Yamakollei Flomo was born to the union of Yamah Flomo and Togba Flomo (predeceased) on November 8, 1950, in Lofa County, Liberia. He was the eldest of all his siblings. He was also a twin, who passed away at birth.
Flomo as a young child began his education in Monrovia Liberia, where he obtained his high school diploma from Martha Tubman Memorial Academy. After high school, he worked for the Republic of Libera National Police Department for many years before migrating to America. In the pursuit of a better life for himself, he came to America and began to focus on his education. He attended college at New Jersey University (formerly known as Jersey City College) and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree.
Flomo later established a career in the airline industry extending 19 years before retiring due to a work-related injury in the division of Fleet Service at TWA, presently American Airlines. He worked in Newark, New Jersey, St. Louis, Missouri, the location for the hub of the airlines and later LaGuardia Airport in New York City. In addition to his career, a highlight in his life included the birth of his two children and grandchildren.
Flomo resided in Jersey City, New Jersey for many years where he started his foundation. He was proud and active member of ULA, the Union of Liberia Association of North Jersey in the America in the mid 80’s. He was also an active player for Afro 11, a Jersey City soccer team.
Flomo purchased his 1st home in Newark, NJ in 2003. From St. Louis to New Jersey in early 2000s, he returned to New Jersey to reside closer and enjoy family time. As a father and grandfather, he was very proud and instilled the importance and significance of education to become a part of his children’s life’s if it fulfilled a passion.
During his early migration to America, he united in marital union to Jestina B. Tumu, whom he was married to for many years. From that union, they had two kids, Samuel B. Johnson, Yamah S. Edwards and also raised two children from that marriage, Rose Maddox and Kate Pascucci. In 2005, he started a new life when he met Ionia Flomo. On Feb 14, 2006, they united and started their marital union. They have been married for 15 years until he departed this earth at the home in Newark, NJ. From that union, they shared a common son, Yoke Harris.
Flomo enjoyed the heart of his experiences filled with music and dancing to music ranging from African, Caribbean, Rap & R& B. His value, appreciation and balance in life would reflect his transitioned at home peacefully which is a true testament of his life.
He is survived by his wife, Ionia Flomo, children, Samuel Johnson (Fatuma Johnson), Yamah Edwards (Francis Edwards), Common son from Marriage, Yoke Harris, his favorite cousin. Ms., Vashti Turkett-Jones and the Jones Family, ex-wife & mother of his two children, Jestina B. Johnson, his three grand-children whom he cherished dearly, Justin N. Johnson, Kendell B. Edwards and Jemuel Johnson and a host of in-laws, cousins, extended family & friends.
