Tribute to Mr. Jacob Garblah Daniels "JD" Journalist,
Diplomat, Humanitarian
Jacob
G. Daniels "JD" as his friends knew him, passed
away on Sunday, November 25, 2007 at the age of 67 years.
Jacob Daniels, diplomat, politician, philanthropist, ardent
sportsman (#10 for The Mighty Barrolle Team), loving father,
devoted husband, and above all, a gentleman in the true sense
of the word, was born Toun-whea Giakwe and Kpah Vah in Timbo,
River Cess (Liberia) on July 11, 1940. JD, as he is affectionately
called, is a Journalist. He worked with the Liberian newspaper,
The Liberian Star, prior to his assignment with the Liberian
government abroad. He served as Third Secretary to the Liberian
Mission to the United Nations, New York, for fifteen years
and was later promoted to Consul at the Liberian Consulate
in New York for six years. As a statesman and diplomat, he
worked assiduously to promote and uphold the dignity and pride
of the great nation of Liberia at home and abroad. On November
2, 2002, along with Liberia's late and former Ambassador,
Nathan Barnes (1914-1975), JD received a most significant
and prestigious award from the Marylanders for Progress Organization
of Washington D.C.
"JD"
was a devote Christian whose strong beliefs and faith in God
helped him survive a fifteen (15) day coma due to complications
of a massive stroke in 1994 that forced him into retirement.
However, he remained active and could be seen in social circles,
as well as visiting friends and family every-now-and-then.
Oh…how he would sit for "hours" at a time writing
numerous and multiple page letters to family friends and various
organizations. His penmanship was amazingly eloquent and precise
that it appeared to have been created by a machine of some
sort. People often marveled at his craftsmanship.
"JD"
was usually involved in legal, social, and political arenas
advocating for his people, particularly children. He was often
referred to as the Liberian male version of "Harriet
Tubman" because he established and sustained notoriety
with significant governances in America; which included and
was not limited to, The U.S. Court System, The Immigration
Service, Cargo/Shipping Organizations, and Pan American Airlines
in order to advocate and provide much needed services to his
people and country. These various entities referred to him
as Mr. Daniels and regarded him highly as he became a prominent
figure in the society of the United States for his country.
He and his wife, Malvenia, opened their hearts, purses and
home to many Liberians, strangers, and friends, who immigrated
to the United States. A father of twelve, he and wife Mal's
nurturing was not limited to their children, but a host of
other children who today serve in various professions. On
Saturday, November 25, 2007, JD, was rushed to Jamaica hospital
and was called by his maker, in the presence of his daughter,
Vera, to his final rest.
The
late Jacob G. Daniels will be remembered by family and so…
many friends for his generosity and altruistic demeanor that
empowered him to pursuit all endeavors with diligence and
purpose for his country, country-men, and absolute strangers.
Jacob
Daniels will be greatly missed by his family, many friends,
and his country. His children and grandchildren too will never
forget him. Left to mourn his passing are his wife, Mal; daughters,
Tupee, Ajuah, Vera, Aba, Watchie,, Marilyn, Teece, Facia,
Freda, Jackie, Pet, Geneve; sons, J. Junior, J. Garblah Davis,
Jacob, small Garblah, Garblah, Tini, Var, John, Vincent, Konah,
Cox jr., Ben, Phillip, Alvin, Alexander and Rondell; grandchildren,
Nana, Jags, Jai, Destiny, Jacob, Cody, Precious, Davon, Deavonna,
Bernest, Miatta, Shantal, Javon, Devin, Kula, Otillia, Josephine,
Rashawn, Damien, Darrey, Fabiana, Amelia, Daphinie, Seon,
Will Cox III, Amari, and Amad; sister, Ma Watchie, Juah, Teetee,
Weadeah, and Annie; brother, Choyou; nieces, Salena, Henrietta,
and Charity; nephews, Moses and Nathan, and a host of cousins,
great-grandchildren, and friends.
A
Celebration of "JD's" life will be held on Friday,
December 7th, at The Grace Church, 155-15 Jamaica Ave at Parsons
Blvd (Queens, NY), 6pm. Communion Funeral Service is scheduled
for Saturday, December 8th (1 P.M.), at The Cathedral Church
of Saint John the Divine, 1047 Amersterdam Ave. at 112th Street
(Manhattan, NY), 1pm. Various parking facilities are located
in the area for your convenience. Any pledges in memory of
