Snap Shots from Monrovia

January 2008

Monrovia, Liberia, West Africa

The "Pem-Pem" Boys of 19th Street.

Liberians call these bikes Pem Pem, because that is how their horn sounds as they make their way around cars, people and things. Some people think they should be restricted to the back roads. I think they are essential to Liberia's transportation problems. With Monrovia traffic and limited availability of public transportation, the pem pems are ideal. They are small, they can get through heavy traffic jams and many times, will get you there faster then any car would except police escort. Most importantly, they will take you where the taxi doesn't want to go.

These guys take passengers to and from the main roads and the inside communities. For a small fee, they will take you anywhere you need to go, and in the interior, they are a valuable source of transportation.

Someone decided to clothe this statue at the old Relda cinema. I guess they thought the iron titty was too much, it needed covering.
