Princess Ojumiri Lucinda King Wilkins

Sun Rise March 16, 1929 - Sunset December 13, 2020

Psalm 23 : Verse 1 “The lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.”

Her siblings called her Oju, her children called her Mama, her grandchildren called her Grannie Princess or Grannie P with swag.

The world knew her as Princess Ojumiri Lucinda King Wilkins. Firstborn to mother Modu Johnson and father, Emile King in Freetown, Sierra Leone, she grew up to be a trailblazer.

In an era where women were expected to only marry and build a family, Princess Ojumiri added pursuing an education and career to the list.

She received fundamental education at (FSSG) Freetown Secondary School for Girls and her first nursing degree at TNIMA Nursing school in Liberia. She married the late Jerry I Wilkins Senior in 1952. Later on in life, she traveled abroad to study Nursing in London, England, and worked at Moorfields Eye Hospital London.

Princess journeyed back to the motherland, settled in Liberia, and raised her children. She managed the Well Baby Clinic at The Liberian Red Cross. Neighbors in the community would come to her home seeking medical care, which she gave freely. During her time with the Red Cross, Princess traveled overseas to work in Russian orphanages and various countries worldwide. Yet, (as she often declared with pride and sparkling eyes) her most significant accomplishment was her children! She had 5 children and adopted several family members.

Princess Oju worked tirelessly as a single mother to ensure all her children received an education. Without a doubt, she was an ambitious, hardworking, and resilient woman, but she played even harder. Some say she was "the life of the party." Those close to her knew that she was the party! She approached life with a joyous youthful exuberance that charmed people around her. Ms. Oju was everyone's favorite socialite. Adorned in the latest fashion complemented with an elaborate hat, Princess Oju would step out in style, and the onlookers would know that the" Queen of Princesses" had arrived!

Yet, the time has come, and she has now departed. She is survived by her children, Jerry (Rudene) Wilkins, Marilyn (Samuel) Stryker, Larry Wilkins, Geraldine Wilkins, Rosemarie (Denzil) Nicolson, George (Jartu) Kumakeh, Mildred Ola Fahnbulleh,18 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, her siblings Kojo (Amanda) King, Prudence King, Violet Bedell, Raynold Quaku King, and Amelia (Wellington) Capeheart, several cousins such as Admire King Davis, nieces, and nephews.

Her name exuded royalty. Her queen-like essence projected a presence that demanded and received respect. Her legacy will live on for generations to come.

Rest in peace Mama, Grannie P, Princess Ojumiri Lucinda King Wilkins.
