REV. SANDO EDISON TOWNSEND, MODERATOR EMERITUS (PCL)
With profound sorrow, the Townsend, Walker, Merriam, George and Bramdia families, with the Presbyterian Church of Liberia (PCL), announce the peaceful passing, in his 59th year of their beloved father, brother, uncle, grandfather, cousin, immediate past Moderator, gospel musician; patriot; devout Christian and dedicated public servant; Rev. Sando Edison Townsend. This sad event occurred on Thursday, September 3, 2020, at John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospitalin Monrovia, Liberia after a brief period of illness.
He leaves to mourn his loss, his widow of 29 years, Mother Dwede M. Townsend; children: Pearline Townsend-Brown, Sammie E. Townsend, Sando E. Townsend, Jr., and Dwede Y. Townsend and a host of foster children including Rita Massaquoi, Rev. George W. Tugbeh, Garley Talewolly, Sensee Johnson, Joe P. Sumo, Kaly Marriam, Mabel Scott, Julia Hawa Townsend, Sando Dickson Townsend, and Tony Okillie.
His brothers and sisters: Annie Townsend, Rev. Dr. Rita Townsend, Julius Townsend, Clarence Townsend, Everett Townsend, Regina Porte Townsend, Lowell Wesley, Hawa Zoe Bramdia, Mannah Bramdia, Kpannah Sarah Dickson, Martha Townsend, Eric Townsend and Chingo Townsend, along with nine grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends. Three of his brothers predeceased him: George Townsend, E. Reginald Townsend, Jr., and Joe Sumo.
Reverend Sando Edison Townsend, Sr. was born on December 4, 1961 in Vaizolon, Bomi Territory now Bomi County. His parents, Honorable E. Reginald Townsend, Sr., and Hawa- Zoe Quaziah Gballah, predeceased him.
Young Townsend embraced the Christian faith at an early age and became a devout member of the Presbyterian denomination in which he ascended as its Moderator in later years.
The late Reverend Sando Edison Townsend was an articulate and motivational preacher who interspersed his sermons with hymns and songs of praises. He was known as the church’s walking encyclopedia and widely respected by his congregation, friends, and all who knew him. He will be dearly missed.

Funeral services over the remains of immediate past Moderator Sando Edison Townsend, Moderator Emeritus are as follows:
On Thursday, October 1, 2020 at Three O’ Clock Post Meridian, the remains of Reverend Sando Edison Townsend will be removed from the Samuel A. Stryker Funeral Parlour in Sinkor, Monrovia, Liberia and transferred to the First Presbyterian Church in Monrovia, between Broad and Johnson Streets for a night of Wake-Keeping. Wake-Keeping begins at 6:00 Post Meridian.
At Nine o’ clock Ante Meridian, on Friday, October 2, 2020, funeral rites over the remains of Reverend Sando Edison Townsend will be said at the same venue. Internment follows in his birth county, Bomi, Liberia.
