Adolphus Kla Shannon, Sr.

Sunrise: June 11, 1945 - Sunset: July 24, 2020

Born in Monrovia, Liberia, West Africa to the union of Mr. Johnathan Himie Shannon, Sr. & Mrs. Albertha Wright Shannon, Adolphus was the oldest of six children. Growing up, he developed a unique relationship with each of his siblings: Olivia Nmade Shannon, Johnathan Himie Shannon, Jr., Euphemia Wede Shannon, Rev. Himie Budu Shannon, and Lawodo Glover.

Always a stellar scholar, Adolphus graduated from the prestigious St. Patrick’s High School in 1965 where he served as Senior Class Vice President. Shortly after his graduation, he began an exceptionally conscientious, hardworking, and dedicated career at the Voice of America Relay Station (VOA) in Careysburg, Liberia. During his tenure, he received a multitude of awards and recognition. He was selected to attend the Management Training Program at the LaSalle Extension University in Chicago, Illinois, USA and received a diploma in Business Management. He remained a faithful employee at VOA for twenty-eight years. Adolphus was also one of the founding members and second president of the 21 Club established to unite and encourage young men to attain their goals while forming lifelong friendships.

Adolphus was introduced to the love of his life, Josephine Brent, at the Fancy Fair in the mid-sixties in Monrovia, Liberia. He married his beloved “Jojo” on March 27, 1970. The union was blessed with three children: Klâdé Shannon Moore (Robert E. Moore, Sr.), Wede Shannon Hare (Augustus G. Hare, III) and Adolphus Kla Shannon, Jr.

Due to the Liberian Civil War in 1990, the devoted provider and protector of his family sought refuge in the United States of America. Together with his family, Adolphus resided in Northwest Indiana for over 20 years and later relocated to Stockbridge, Georgia until his transition.

Adolphus remained a loving husband, remarkable father, wonderful brother, cool grandfather, proud great grandfather, wise uncle, and loyal friend to many.

Adolphus loved to dance!!!! His friends affectionately referred to him as James Brown for being the life of the party with his smooth moves. His friendly attitude made him a pleasure to be around. He never met a stranger. Adolphus made friends everywhere he went. His kind and jovial spirit was infectious. Adolphus was meticulous about his appearance. His signature accessories were hats, cigars, shoes, and cologne.

As a father and grandfather whose primary goal was to instill morals and values to live by, Adolphus demonstrated how integrity is more valuable than material things. His act of imparting wisdom to his legacies was rubbing his forehead against theirs, proudly saying, “Wisdom, my boy/gal; be wise in all you do.” He was the epitome of love, respect, dignity, humility, honesty, and wit. He will greatly be missed!

He was preceded in death by his parents, Johnathan & Albertha Shannon, and his siblings Johnathan, Wede and Budu.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife and lifetime partner of over fifty years, Josephine Brent Shannon, his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, sisters and a host of relatives and friends.
