Counselor A. Wallace Octavius Obey, Sr.

The Obey, Dahn, Clark, Stewart, Wright and Carey families mourn the death, in his 82nd year, of Counselor A. Wallace Octavius Obey Sr. He transitioned on November 19, 2020 in Monrovia after a brief illness. Counselor Obey was affectionately known to many as “Uncle Wallace”, “Cousin Wallace”, “Counselor” or simply “Papa”.

He is survived by his partner Famatta Carey, his sons: Ruben, Amos, Octavius Jr. (Anne) , Wesley (Helena), Lee, Nyan, Christopher, and Sam, his daughters: Dinahlee (Walter) , Jackie (James), Lucy (Ellington), Mamie, Musu, Princess, Sandra, Wokie and Sienneh. His son, Prince, predeceased him.
His grandchildren include: Wallace, Quintin, Ansonius, Segrana, Angel, Leeta, Marion, Kahlifala, Musa, Austin, Octavius (Famo), Joncy, Nehwon, Nenlead, Ellington, Lucinda.

He was the youngest child born to the union of the late Lt. Wallace Obey of the Liberia Frontier Force and Dinah Clark Obey both of Arthington, Liberia. His siblings, Mae-Ellen Obey Cole, Anna Obey Saydee, Lucy Obey Stewart, Delaney Obey, Sammie Obey, Tommy Obey, Francis Obey and Amos Obey, all predeceased him.
Also grieving this loss are a host of close nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, friends and acquaintances.
At an early age, the young Wallace followed in his father’s footsteps and moved to Nimba County where his father had been stationed. He was embraced by the local chiefs due to his father’s history and rapport with them. Wallace developed a deep respect for the people and due to his personal style and demeanor grew to be respected and loved. Among many roles, he taught at Sanniquellie Central High, coached the football and boxing teams, and served as Clerk Typist for the late Charles H. Williams, former District Commissioner of the Central Province (what is now Nimba and Bong Counties). He later forged a legal career in the Liberian judicial system beginning as Clerk of Court for 8th Judicial Circuit in Sanniquellie.

He fell in love and married one of Nimba’s own, Mary Dolly Dahn of Saclapea in 1960. This union was blessed with six children. Sadly, she predeceased him in 1980.

Counselor Obey served Liberia with distinction in various roles. President William R. Tolbert Jr. appointed him County Attorney for Nimba County, County Attorney for Montserrado, and later promoted him to Assistant Minister of Justice for Litigation. He subsequently was appointed Solicitor General for the Republic of Liberia by the President Samuel K Doe.
