Mrs. Esther “Lady” Hughes (October 18, 1942- August 2, 2012)
“Veteran Liberian Educator, Devout Christian, Humanitarian, Devoted Wife, Loving Mother, Sister and Committed Citizen.
The Hughes, Currens, Williams, Bright, Washington and Kennedy families announce with profound regrets the home-going of Mrs. Esther “Lady” Hughes, former Principal, Paynesville Community School ( PCS), District Education Officer Right and Left Banks, Montserrado County, Chief Education Officer, Margibi County, Assistant Director of Personnel, Ministry of Education, Chairperson Liberian Red Cross Society , Montserrado County, Commissioner, Liberian Girl Guides Association(LGGA) Lofa County, National Trainer LGGA, Chief Commissioner LGGA; Member of the University of Liberia Chorus; Special Representative of the American Colonization Society to Liberia during the civil crisis, a veteran educator, a genuine philanthropist, a mother to all, and an outstanding citizen of the Republic of Liberia.
Mrs. Esther L. Hughes, affectionately called "Mamie", "Sister", "Lady E", "Lady Esther", and "Mamie Hughes" was born unto the union of the late Daniel Currens and Madam Priscilla Garmai Currens (Wee Garmai). This sad event occurred on Thursday, August 2, 2012 at 9 A.M. at the John F. KennedyMemorial Hospital in Monrovia, Liberia.
Mamie leaves to mourn her loss, her husband of fifty-three (53) years, Mr. Ernest R. Hughes Sr., her children: Emmanuel “Papa” Hughes, Georgia-Mae "Musu" Hughes-Harris, Ernestine Hughes and Ernest Robert "Bobby" Hughes, Jr.
GRAND & GREAT GRAND CHILDREN: Several grand and great-grand children including: Chris Hughes, Martinus “Junior” Whitfield, Esther “Queen” Harris and Abraham “AB” Harris.
Surviving Relatives:
Sisters: Victoria Williams (Michael) & Family, Rose Washington Bright (Marcus) & Family, Anna Solanke & Family, and the Washington and Kennedy Sisters.
Brothers: Hon. E. Sumo Jones Family, the Henry Currens Family ,and Washington and Kennedy brothers.
