Elbertha Garnett
The
Family of Mrs. M. Elbertha Garnett, affectionately
called "Sister", "Aunt Bertha",
or "Cousin Bertha", wishes to announce
with deep regrets her passing on Thursday, June
3, 2010, in her 92nd year. This sad event occurred
at the residence of her son and only child Eric
S. Cox Sr. and his wife Magretta, in Washington
DC.
During
her extensive career as an educator in Liberia,
her many students affectionately called her
"Teacher Garnett" and subsequently
"Teacher Knott" after her marriage
to Mr. Arnold Knott, now deceased, a music teacher
at William V. S. Tubman High School.
At
the beginning of her career in education, she
taught at the Lott Carey Baptist Mission School
in Brewerville. During the establishment of
the Monrovia Consolidated School System (MCSS)
by the Liberian Government, an initiative funded
by USAID, Mrs. M. Elbertha Garnett played a
leading role in creating the African Studies
Program with emphasis on researching Liberian
languages and the formation of the Cultural
Troupe at the William V. S. Tubman High School.
This tour of duty required her to travel extensively
throughout rural Liberia along with several
delegations from USAID. The deceased last served
as Supervising Principal, Ministry of Education,
Republic of Liberia. She also assisted her church
with their educational endeavors and became
Assistant Principal of the Seventh-day Adventist
Junior and Senior High School in Monrovia.
She leaves to mourn her loss her son Eric Cox
Sr. (Magretta), several grand children, great
grand children, many nieces and nephews, two
sisters in law, Rev. Dr. Genevieve Garnett and
Mrs. Thelma Garnett and a host of relatives
and friends.
The Funeral Service will be held on Friday,
June 18, 2010.
