It is with great sadness that our family announces the passing of our beloved mother, sister, cousin, aunt, and grandmother, Dr. Maima Darbah Fahnbulleh. Maima was born in Robertsport, Grand Cape Mount County Liberia on September 15, 1946. She is predeceased by her parents Rev. Urias Baiyembeh Freeman and Elizabeth Gordon Freeman and by her sister Ray Famatta Freeman.

Maima earned her Ph.D. in Social Work from Howard University in 2008. She also held Master’s Degrees from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor (Social Work in 1971); (Public Health in 1973). She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Zoology at McGill University in Montreal, QC in 1970. She received her high school diploma at the Episocpal High School in Robertsport, Liberia.

Maima had a long and illustrious career in public service that spanned five decades and several countries including Liberia, Grenada, and the United States. She served as the Deputy Mayor of Monrovia, Liberia and the Director of Social Welfare and Assistant Minister of Social Welfare. Maima later moved to the island of Grenada where she initiated, designed and managed their first Women's Resource Center at the Agency for Rural Transformation.

Maima also served as a consultant to UNICEF and the United Nations Population Fund. Her area of concentration for this work was Reproductive Health in the Caribbean. Driven by her mantra, What are you going to do about it? Maima returned to Liberia in 2010 as a Senior Technical Advisor at the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.

Maima advocated for people with disabilities including those who are blind and visually impaired. She was very involved as a self-advocate in the New York City Parkinson’s community. Maima participated in various activities at NYU Langone Health’s Fresco Institute for Parkinson’s and Movement Disorders. She proudly participated in the annual Parkinson’s Unity Walks as a member of NYU’s Team Bold Moves. Maima saw Parkinson’s disease as a pathway to life rather than a pathway to death.
