"For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us." ~ Romans 8:18
Alexander Pooley Doe went on to glory on November 30, 2020, in Lawrenceville, GA — the result of a protracted illness that waxed and waned throughout his adult life.
Alexander (affectionately known as Alex or Al) was born on October 5, 1957, in Harlem, NY, and was the eldest son of five children born to Isaac K. Doe, Sr. and Mary Kyne Doe — both originally from Karluway Statutory District of Maryland County, Liberia.
Exhibiting a love of music and a keen interest in electronics from an early age, Alex became an avid record collector and in-demand DJ hired to entertain crowds at neighborhood events and numerous gatherings throughout New York’s Liberian community in the late 70s and early 80s.
During that same period, Alex’s interest in electronics and instincts for tinkering turned into an active side business repairing radios, stereos, and televisions for family and friends, and later evolved into a full-fledged passion — leading him to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the City College of New York.
Alex later turned his passion into a fulfilling vocation, landing a job with Hewlett-Packard, where he worked for virtually the entirety of his professional career, involving long-term stints at their offices in New York, Atlanta, and Roseville, CA, where he relocated for several years in the 90s.
A quintessential New Yorker at heart, Alex was armed with sarcastic wit, a bold personality, and a sense of stylistic “cool” that was easy to admire and difficult to resist.
Ever curious and eager to remain active, Alex indulged a range of hobbies in his post-retirement years, among them caring for exotic fish, film viewing, gaming, interior design, and restoring classic American sports cars.
Alex is survived by his father, Isaac K. Doe, Sr.; siblings Edythe, Abraham and Andrew Doe; nieces and nephews Miyesha and Demetrius Cheeks, & Danetha, Abraham and Brianna Doe; aunts and uncles Doris Greene, Sarah & Benjamin Tay, James & Rachel Wilson, and his namesake Alexander Gbaye (in the U.S.), and Lucy, Mariah, and Banny Kyne (in Liberia); sister-in-law Audrey Watson Doe; scores of cousins and a host of life-long friends.
He was predeceased by his mother, Mary Kyne Doe, by one brother, Isaac K. Doe, Jr, and by brother-in-law, Simeon Cheeks.
It was Alex’s wish to forego a homegoing service.
Thank you for all of your thoughts and prayers during this challenging time.
