Leonard Theophilus DeShield, Sr. (November 24,
1934-November 6, 2009)
It is with deep sorrow that the DeShield, Gardiner,
David, and Tolbert families announce the homegoing
of our beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather,
Brother, Uncle, Cousin, and Friend, The Honorable
Leonard Theophilus DeShield, Sr. This sad event
occurred on November 6, 2009 at Beacon Place,
Greensboro, NC. Poppie, Pops, G-Pops, Papay,
or Chief as he was affectionately called, was
a Prince among men and he lived his life accordingly.
He has fought the good fight, he has finished
his course, and he has kept the faith; therefore,
is laid up for him a crown of righteousness
which the Lord the righteous judge shall give
him on that day.
Cherishing the memory of his unconditional love,
his constant support, and his gentle guidance
are his beloved wife of more than 49 years,
Mrs. Sadie L. DeShield; their children: Leontyne
(Emmanuel Freeman), Lesa (Willie Givens, Jr.),
Les (Alice), McKinley, Leonard (Ivy), Sam (Klade),
Alice (Alfred Scott), Wilmot Gardiner, Matilda
Goodlin, John Koiwood (Teta), Barbara (Sam Hina),
Cynthia Mulbah, Motima DeShield; 13 grandchildren;
his brothers: Frederick Hunder (Cenethe), Russell
DeShield (Fametta); his sisters: Frances D.
Freeman, Perrine DeShield, McRinna DeShield,
Earlene DeShield, his aunts: Mrs. Barbara Gardiner
and Mrs. Mai DeShield; his Godmother: Mrs. Antoinette
Tubman, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins,
and other relatives.
